CRATER LAKE NATIONAL PARK — Forget Rosie Ruiz.

Former Klamath Union standout Liz Lindgren had her own moment of chaos Saturday as the former state champion runner almost set a record in the women’s 6.7-mile run.
Lindgren crossed the finish line at the Crater Lake Rim Runs and Marathon sixth overall in the shortest race of the day.

But, no one knew that — at first.

The number she wore was registered to Debbie Caldwell.

Caldwell, however, elected not to run and gave her number to Lindgren, a 19-year-old who now runs at Arizona State University, and the former KU runner was the first woman to finish the 6.7-mile race.

Lindgren finished in 40 minutes, flat, just 21 seconds off the women’s course record set by Sandy Rowan in 1987. Rowan then lived in Klamath Falls, but now resides in Medford.

“I wasn’t registered and Caldwell’s husband (Calvin) said that I could use her number and change (results at the end of the race),” Lindgren said, and that is exactly what happened.

“I’m 19, rather than 43,” Lindgren said with chagrin.

“The elevation wasn’t that bad,” she added of her first run at Crater Lake, “and the smoke wasn’t that bad. I’ve been trying to train in Klamath Falls for cross country (at ASU).
“The race was OK, but there was a ton of downhill, but I’ve been doing a lot of hills.”
Lindgren said that she was able to run most of the race with another former KU runner, Jonathan Osborne, who now runs for Willamette University.
Osborne, however, continued on to finished third, overall, in the 13-mile race.

“Actually, it was nice to be able to run with Jon,” Lindgren said.
Lindgren finished about three and one-half minutes behind the overall winner of the 6.7-mile race, Joe Dudman of Portland.

“This was my fifth straight 6.7-mile race here, and my second win,” Dudman said after he finished his race in 36:33, well off the course record of Tom Ansbery of Tucson, Ariz., set in 1983.
Dudman finished second to Monty Gregg of Redmond in 2000 and 2001.

“I saw the smoke,” Dudman said, “but I didn’t really notice it al all, only the hills.
“The last couple of years, I’ve had trouble going past the first hill. This year, I wanted to run it solidly and then hold on. But, on that last hill, I felt as bad as I ever have.”

Still, he ran his fastest Crater Lake race, and said that he usually comes down for a couple days vacation and hiking and then runs in the Crater Lake Rim Runs and Marathon.
“It’s such a unique location, and really well organized,” Dudman said.

“My strategy paid off, but I thought the last couple of guys would catch me,” he said of Gregg and Tony Hawkes, who were second and third in 37:13 and 37:19, respectively.

“I thought about doing the 13(-mile race), for about half a day,” Dudman said.

There were 118 runners who completed the 6.7-mile run, and another 28 completed the 6.7-mile walk, which was won by Roger Brown in one hour, 27 minutes and 39 seconds.
