Crater Lake acting
superintendent Stephanie Toothman is Crater
Lake National Park’s acting superintendent through March 31. She
replaces Chuck Lundy, who recently retired. A permanent
superintendent is expected be named in March.
Toothman, 60, is a 30-year National Park Service
employee and heads the park service’s Cultural Resource Programs
for the Pacific West Region. She and her staff provide support
to 57 units in Washing ton, Oregon, Idaho, California, Nevada,
Hawaii and the Pacific Islands.
“I’m really pleased. It’s definitely a change
from being in Seattle,” she said. “Gradually, I’m getting to see
all the projects I was involved with in the 1980s and 90s.”
Toothman was involved in many Crater
Lake historic preservation projects, including reconstruction of
the Crater Lake Lodge, replacement and restoration of Munson
Valley buildings, former superintendent’s residence and others.
“I’m pretty familiar with the resources here, I’m
glad to have the experience of living in the park. I think it
will help me when I go back to my regular job in understanding
problems facing the park.”
Toothman graduated from Smith College in the American Studies program and completed her M.A. and Ph.D. as a
University Fellow in the American Civilization program at the
University of Pennsylvania.
