Crater Lake historic home to be restored

CRATER LAKE -- Plans to rehabilitate the superintendent's residence at Crater Lake -- part of a series of restoration projects in the Munson Valley Historic District -- are now available for public review.

The house was built in the 1933 and has a classic style with two stories, a steep roof and a large stone fireplace, Crater Lake National Park spokesman Michael Justin said.

"It's really a wonderfully typical structure that dates back to early days of the architecture of the park," Justin said.

The house was deemed uninhabitable in 1998. Restoration will include modernizing heating, plumbing and other structures. Grants and National Park Service money will cover the estimated $1.6 million building costs.

The project is expected to be complete in 2005 and will be used for administrative and public use associated with the Science and Learning Center.

Public comments are welcomed for the project until Dec. 23.
