CRATER LAKE — Some backcountry trails at Crater Lake National
Park that were originally built as fire access roads may be
either rehabilitated or relocated.
Chief ranger David Brennan said the park has prepared an
environmental assessment for the work and is seeking public
comments, which will be accepted through July 7.
Brennan said the rehabilitation project was proposed in 1997.
Two small trail sections were completed in 2000.
As part of the project, park staff will attempt to decrease the
road-like appearance by various trail maintenance, relocation
and revegetation methods.
Trails being considered under the environmental assessment
include the Pacific Crest, Union Peak and Annie Springs trails.
The assessment can be viewed at the park's Web site at
www.nps.gov/crla/trailsea.htm. Copies are also available for
review at the park and public libraries, including Klamath Falls
and Chiloquin.
