Examination of Crater Lake
The Newport Mercury
September 4, 1886
The examination of Crater Lake, in Oregon, gives scientific evidence of the
appropriateness of its name, and shows it to be in the heart of a mountain
hollowed but by volcanic action. If one of these days the cinder cones that are
on the bottom should send up fire again things will be lively in that region,
and Uncle Sam will possess the biggest hot bath in creation.
