Fresno Teacher is Slashed by Crater Lake Park Bear

Klamath Falls, Ore. Robert W. Young, 33, a sixth grade teacher in the Teilman
School, was slashed over the left eye early today by a bear which entered his
tent at Crater Lake National Park.
Young's injury, doctors said, apparently will not impair his vision. He is in
the Klamath Valley Hospital here.
Young, his wife, their two children, Tom, 4, and Marty, 7, had been on
vacation since August 14th. Neighbors said they were to return Sunday.
The Youngs live at 3203 East Holland Avenue.
Young reported he awoke early and discovered a female bear and her two cubs
in the tent. The mother bear struck him over the eye with one paw and then left
with the cubs.
In a separate bear inflicted injury in the park, Mrs. Jean Groulx, 26, of
Oakland, suffered a gash on her cheek when a bear entered her tent.
One foot of snow fell in the park in the last 24 hours and it is believed the
bears cannot find natural food and are getting bolder in foraging.
