Friends of Crater Lake to repair Annie Creek
Herald and News
Klamath Falls, Oregon
August 03, 2004
The Friends of Crater Lake, a volunteer group that offers
assistance to Crater Lake National Park, will join a park trail
crew to help repair Annie Creek Aug. 20 to 22.
The Annie Creek loop trail begins and ends at Mazama Campground
near the park's south entrance. The trail twists and turns down
the steep walls of Annie Creek Canyon, then follows the creek,
crossing it several times before again snaking its way up the
canyon walls.
Because of its proximity to the Mazama campground and one of the
park's few streams, it is a very popular trail. One of the foot
bridges crossing Annie Creek needs to be replaced.
"There
are also several other trail tasks that we will tackle. Water
bars need maintenance and improvement. Bushes need to be
trimmed. There will be jobs for everyone, no matter your
physical strength, endurance or other inclinations," said George
Buckingham, Friends president and a former park chief ranger.
All volunteers will be signed-on as official "Volunteers in
Parks."
Volunteers will have free campsites at either Mazama or Lost
Creek campgrounds, but prearrangements must be made with
Buckingham.
Friday night will be devoted to social pursuits. Volunteers will
work all day Saturday and spend the evening socializing. On
Sunday morning volunteers will finish up and then leave about
noon.
"We do need to know who is coming so we can reserve campsites
and plan our menus," said Buckingham, who can be contacted at
783-3136 or by e-mail at foclnp-@alwaysonnetworks.com.
The Friends played a major role in sponsoring the Crater Lake
Bicentennial Celebration in 2002, helped publish the first-ever
history about the park, and regularly operate a winter-time
information booth and handle other park projects.
