CRATER LAKE: While the Bybee Wildland Fire-Use Complex plays its
natural role in burning vegetation to improve the ecosystem,
spreading to the north and east, firefighters are managing it at
its south and west borders.
The complex fire has burned 1,150 acres since fires were ignited
by lightning between July 23 and Aug. 7. Smoke accumulation has
increased in and around Crater Lake National Park since the
fires have burned through differing fuels and topography, with
weather changes.
Firefighters have constructed control lines and helicopters have
flown water drops to control the fire at its south and west
borders.
Fire managers expect these fires to burn throughout the
remainder of the season and allow natural conditions and weather
to eventually extinguish them.
All park roads and facilities, including boat tours, remain
open. The Lightning Springs Trail and a 10-mile section of the
Pacific Crest Trail remain closed for public safety.
