CRATER LAKE - Rim Drive, which circles 33 miles around Crater
Lake, is now open.
Chuck Lundy, Crater Lake National Park's superintendent, said
the opening means park visitors "may now enjoy the spectacular
views of Crater Lake from all of the many vista points along
this scenic drive."
Summer weather has also resulted in the opening of other park
facilities and services.
The Rim Village Visitor Center is open 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
while the Steel Information Center at park headquarters in
Munson Valley is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Most hiking
trails in the park are now open, although snow still covers
sections of some trails. Still closed, however, are The Watchman
and Mount Scott trails.
Lost Creek Campground is open for tent use only. All of the 213
campsites at Mazama Campground, near the park's south entrance,
are open with sites available on a first-come, first-served
basis. People wishing to camp overnight at Mazama should arrive
early in the afternoon to get the best sites.
For information on park programs call 594-3000.
Hours for concession facilities include: Mazama Village gas
station, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Mazama Village Store, 7 a.m. to 10
p.m.; Rim Village cafeteria, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Watchman
restaurant, 5 to 10 p.m.; gift store, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Overnight lodging is available at Crater Lake Lodge and the
Mazama Village Motor Inn. Meals are available at the lodge,
although dining priority goes to people staying at the lodge.
For information and reservations call (541) 830-8700. For
general information on concession services call 594-2255.
