Snow falls at Crater Lake, Mount Ashland

The calendar says it's still summer, but Monday's weather in parts of Southern Oregon suggested that it's really winter.

Snow fell on Mount Ashland and at Crater Lake National Park. But the National Weather Service reported that the snowfall on Mount Ashland was only about 2 inches -- hardly enough for skiing -- and Crater Lake officials said the snow there was not sticking.

The snow level was expected to drop to 6,000 feet Monday night.

The unseasonably cool temperatures and above-normal rainfall prompted the Oregon Department of Forestry to lower the fire danger from extreme to high.

Starting Wednesday, the state will relax some fire restrictions. Use of chain saws and mowing of dry grass will be allowed before 10 a.m., but still barred between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Other restrictions remain in effect on state, county, private and Bureau of Land Management lands that the state protects.

Warm temperatures in the 80s are expected to return later this week.
