More snow: Southern Oregon receives another weather pasting

Snow was accumulating in the mountains Monday night and falling, but not sticking on the Rogue Valley floor as of 11 p.m.

National Weather Service forecasters said there was a chance of the snow level falling as low as 500 feet this morning.

Interstate 5, Highway 140 and Highway 62 were open Monday night, Oregon State Police said. Chains were required in both directions on I-5 over the Siskiyou Summit.

Roads into Crater Lake National Park were closed Monday after a weekend dumping of snow brought depths up to 136 inches. Officials closed both the South Entrance Road and Highway 62 at the West Park boundary on and off all weekend, with motorists required to use chains on packed snow when traffic was allowed.

The Ariel summit chair at Ski Ashland also was closed Monday because of high winds. Another 6 inches of snow Monday brought the ski resort to 125 inches at the base and 172 inches on top. In California, the Mount Shasta Ski Park was digging out from under 4 1/2 feet of new snow since Saturday, with officials predicting 18 inches more accumulation before winter storms subside.
