Obituary: J. Stanley Brode

J. Stanley Brode, 81, son of Howard S. Brode, professor of biology at Whitman College for nearly 40 years, died Feb. 12 following a short illness, in Santa Barbara, Calif.

A memorial service is being held at the Presbyterian Church in Santa Monica.

Brode was born May 1. 1895, in Chicago, and came to Walla Walla in the fall of 1899 with his parents The family home was 433 E. Alder St. Brode attended Sharpstem School. Walla Walla Walla School and graduated from Whitman College in 1918, He earned a masters degree at the University of Washington and did further graduate work at the University of California at Berkeley

He taught for two years in the high school at Dayton. In 1920 be married Ruth Leonard and the pair went to Skagit County. Wash, where he taught and was active in school administrative work for five years Following the interim there, he taught for nine years in the high school science department at Pendleton.

He has been in Santa Monica since 1923, teaching life science in Santa Monica College until his retirement in 1960. He spent the summers of 1933 through 1936 as a ranger naturalist at Crater Lake National Park.

He conducted research and published articles on fresh-water life in ponds and streams of eastern Oregon and Washington and later on the sea life in Santa Monica Bay.

He is survived by his widow. Ruth, at the Santa Monica home; his daughters. Roseann Hamhn, San Clemente, Calif.: Marian Rollin. Storrs. Conn., and Carolyn Harkin, Cupertino, Calif.: 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and his brother. Robert B. Brode. Berkeley. Calif.
