Xanterra Parks & Resorts, the country's largest operator of national and
state parks and resorts, has been awarded the 15-year contract to manage
lodging, boating, food service, campgrounds, gasoline station and gift shops
at Crater Lake National Park.
These concessions include the 71-room Crater Lake Lodge,
known for its breathtaking views of Crater Lake and considered the finest
national park lodge in the Northwest.
"We are extremely pleased and very much look forward to
operating the concessions in Crater Lake as it celebrates its 100th
anniversary this year," said Andrew N. Todd, president and CEO of Xanterra.
"We have placed a great emphasis on environmental initiatives and visitor
education, and we believe this approach was a significant factor in
garnering this contract."
Xanterra also operates concessions in Yellowstone National
Park, the North and South Rims of Grand Canyon National Park, Bryce Canyon
National Park, Zion National Park, Death Valley National Park, Petrified
Forest National Park, Everglades National Park, and Mount Rushmore National
Memorial; and at resorts in Napa, Calif.; Nebraska City, Neb., Saratoga
Springs, N.Y. and seven Ohio State Parks.
Lodging choices in Oregon's only national park include the
Crater Lake Lodge and the 40-room Mazama Village Motor Inn. Dining choices
include the Crater Lake Lodge Dining Room and the Rim Village Cafeteria.
Xanterra will construct a new restaurant and gift shop away from the rim as
part of the contract. The concessions operate mid-May to mid-October
annually. Reservations may be made by calling 541/830-8700.
Created May 22, 1902, Crater Lake is the nation's fifth
national park. Crater Lake itself is an extinct volcano in southern Oregon
in the Cascade Range. The caldera that resulted when Mount Mazama erupted
some 7,700 years ago has filled with water to create the deepest lake in the
country at 1,947 feet.
