Romance of College Days at Berkeley: Brilliant Young Geologist and Author to Wed a Former Classmate.

"BERKELEY, August 3. College folks are greatly interested in the announcement which has just been made that Miss Martha Bowen Rice and Herbert W. Furlong are to be wedded on August 10 at the residence of the bride's mother, Mrs. Carrie Rice, 2403 Fulton Street. The maid of honor will be Miss Mabel Rice, a sister of the bride. Miss Isa Henderson of the Alpha Beta Sigma fraternity and a member of the class of 1905, U. C., will be the bridesmaid.

The wedding will be a quiet home affair, only relatives and a few friends having been invited. Miss Reba Galvin, sorority sister of the bride, will play the wedding march. Herbert Evans of the Phi Sigma Delta, a fraternity brother of the groom, will be groomsman.

Miss Rice is a daughter of the late Rev. H. H. Rice, a prominent Presbyterian minister of Oakland. She graduated with the class of 1904 after an unusually prominent college career. In her senior year she was president of the Associated Women Students. She was one of the board of three editors that published the Blue and Gold of her class year, was a member of Alpha Beta Sigma sorority, of the Prytaneans, English Club and Mask and Dagger dramatic societies.

Herbert W. Furlong graduated with the class of '03. He was a member of the Phi Sigma Delta fraternity and is now secretary of the Pacific Commercial Museum, with headquarters in San Francisco. He is a geologist of note. He began a number of books while in college. One of these, "Story of the Sand," is now being used throughout the United States as a text book. While in college he took two trips to the John Day fossil beds in Oregon, doing notable work under Professor Merriam for the State University. He headed an expedition to Crater Lake, in Shasta county, securing remarkable specimens of reptiles.

Furlong comes from a famous old California family, being a son of the late Captain Matthew Furlong, a '49er, who was well known in maritime circles. His mother, Mrs. Furlong, resides at 1937 Bancroft way. His brother, Eustace L. Furlong, is now connected with the geology department of the University of California.
