Dick and Jean Finch, 1920-1940

Crater Lake National Park Centennial Oral Histories

Dick and Jean Finch, 1920-1940

My father, Brynton Finch was a summer Ranger at Crater Lake, and the Modoc Lava Beds from the late 1920’s through 1937. In 1938 he became a permanent Ranger at Crater Lake.

In 1940, he transferred to Rocky Mountain National Park, then Colorado National Monument, the Chief Ranger (acting) at Glacier N.P., and then to Assistant Chief Ranger at Yellowstone N.P.

I worked in road crews and survey crews during the summer of 1938 and 1939. I was a summer fireguard in 1940 and I spent most of the summer as the lookout on the Watchman. I was a summer ranger at Mesa Verde and fire lookout, the summer of 1941.
