Nature Notes From Crater Lake

Crater Lake National Park lies in the High Cascades or the Crest of the Cascades Range and straddles the western cascades and eastern Cascades regions. However, 80 percent of the park lies within the Subalpine forest system which we use here as 5,000 feet or higher.

And, since the park was founded prior to commercial logging of the High Cascades, most of the park is old growth forest. However, a short growing season and low nutrient volcanic soils do not allow for the huge growth of trees as often seen in Western Oregon forests.

Some of the habitats in which you will find birds include Crater Lake itself, Mountain Hemlock Forest, Lodgepole Pine Forest, Ponderosa Pine Forest, Willow Streamside and Montane Meadow Complex, and the Pumice Desert.
