Study
Status:
Continuing
Activity Type:
Inventory
Subject/Discipline:
Herpetology (Amphibians / Reptiles)
Objectives:
(1) To efficiently document the occurrence
of the herpetofauna in Crater Lake National
Park. We will conduct surveys for species
and specialized habitats for known or
suspected taxa in the park.
(2) To develop distribution and abundance
data for species of special concern
regionally such as the Cascades frog and
western toad.
(3) To document biodiversity in wetland and
aquatic habitats of the parks.
Findings and Status:
From 9-12 August 2002, we conducted 14
time-constrained searches (each 2 person-hrs
long) with an emphasis on reptiles. These
yielded observations of 3 sagebrush lizards,
12 Cascade frogs,and 1 Pacific treefrog.
Except visit to a few wet areas (that had
the amphibiasn noted), most time was spent
in lava fields or open terrain. We were in
search of the Short-horned lizard and other
reptiles, which have been reported from few
records in the park. Although no horned
lizards were observed, we found its typical
scat (i.e., mostly ant parts) because horned
lizard mostly eat ants.
In 2003, we intend to conduct further
surveys for reptiles as well as conduct
searches along park streams for Cascade
frogs and other amphibians.
For
this study, were one or more specimens collected and
removed from the park but not destroyed during
analyses?
No
