CRATER LAKE NATIONAL PARK — For Laurie Greenberg, Saturday’s 27th annual running of the Crater Lake Rim Runs and Marathon was more than a stroll in the park.

Greenberg, 27, was the first woman to finish the 13-mile run, in a race won by Stephen Siegel.
“I’m a teacher and we were coming west,” Greenberg said of herself and her husband, who did not run Saturday. “We went online, this race looked like fun and I decided to do it.”

She covered her 13 miles in one hour, 39 minutes and eight seconds.
Siegel, of San Andreas, Calif., was the overall winner in 1:25:50, just ahead of Trevor Hanlin of Grants Pass (1:26:25) and former Klamath Union runner Jonathan Osborne (1:26:52).

“My knees couldn’t take 26 miles on the pavement,” Siegel said. “I usually only run on trails where I live east of Sacramento and Stockton. Dirt’s quite a bit different than pavement.

“My shins felt a pounding (Saturday). I thought I counteract it with new shoes, but that didn’t work. But, it’s an incredible course,” he added.

Greenberg, of Chester, Vt., said she didn’t see that much.

“I kept pushing, kept moving,” Greenberg said. “I run hills in Vermont, but . . .
“When we started this, I read the writeups and saw where everyone said it was such a beautiful run. I didn’t see much of the beauty. I pretty much kept my head down, running.
“I wanted to keep my pace even,” Greenberg said, “for the downhills as well as uphill. My quad(riceps) really hurt on the downhills.”

She said the altitude also bothered her.

“This is higher than I’m used to and my head pounded a little, at times,” Greenberg said, who said that a telephone call to Vermont to her father elicited little more than “you’ll enjoy the views.”

Usually a marathon runner, Greenberg, her husband and a friend will compete in an adventure race in Sacramento next weekend, which is one reason she ran the 13-mile race at Crater Lake, her first career half-marathon.
Also on the horizon is this fall’s New York Marathon.

Greenberg also said she has completed three Boston Marathon races.
Among the interesting results in Saturday’s 13-mile race came when Maureen Lundy of Klamath Falls easily outdistanced her husband, Chuck.

Maureen Lundy was 20th overall in 1:49:13, while her husband finished 64th in 2:13:35. Chuck Lundy is superintendent of Crater Lake National Park, and has run in all but one Crater Lake race since his arrival at the park.
Joyce Richter, who was the top women in last year’s 6.7-mile race, ran the half-marathon this year and finished 18th overall in 1:47:37.
