The Relation of Ancient Man to Crater Lake
WHEN Crater Lake was formed, Indians were living on the plateau to the east. Their implements have recently been unearthed beneath deposits of pumice from Mount Mazama.
During the past few years, many test pits have been made on the banks of the Deschutes River, near Wikiup Butte, with the object of selecting a suitable site for a dam (see map, figure 16). In the course of these excavations, several knives of obsidian were found in a layer of glacial outwash covered by 3 to 4 feet of Crater Lake pumice.1
