Research and Management of Black Bears in Crater Lake National Park, Oregon, 1974

 RECOMMENDATIONS

It is recommended that immediate steps be taken to deny bears the garbage sources identified. Sufficient numbers of bearproof garbage containers (approximately 49 containers) should replace the open garbage containers presently in use at problem bear areas identified in Table 3. An additional 59 open garbage containers should be converted to bear-proof cans as funds and manpower permit. In cases where garbage is stored in containers on the porches of residences, maintenance of doors and windows should be standard or bearproof cans should be installed.

If garbage trucks are not designed to render garbage inaccessible to bears they should not be left overnight in the Dark. If this creates a major problem, some suitable area, relative inaccessible to bears, should be designated for overnight parking.

The garbage box behind the Rim Cafeteria should be replaced with a suitable container or different arrangements should be made for garbage disposal at this site. The concessionaire should be urged to eliminate open garbage containers in conjunction with the Park Service.

Explanation of proper food storage methods should continue to be an important interpretative function. Visitors should be aware of the. bear problem and the desirability of maintaining natural wildlife populations in our parks.

Research Recommendations

It is recommended that black bear studies be continued during the 1974 season. Primary objectives and information sought should include: (1) minimum home range sizes should be determined for several more bears including different age classes of both sexes; (2) movements and home range sizes should be compared with the various vegetative, elevation, and topographic characteristics of a bear’s home range; (3) attempts to determine activity patterns should be expanded to include both day and nighttime hours; (4) and denning dates, locations, and den descriptions should be obtained. Assuming that management recommendations are implemented, success of the program should be evaluated and possible improvements or alterations considered.
