THE SMITH BROTHERS’

CHRONOLOGICAL HISTORY

CRATER LAKE NATIONAL PARK

OREGON

1832 – 2019

FIRST A WORD……..

Chronological histories are never complete.  That is the nature of this type of written history.  New entries are being made with each passing month as current events unfold. Subsequent editions will outdate this one.

Oral remembrances cause what seem to be contradictions, since people remember past events in different ways. And because some of this history is oral history, we have included entries that seem to be inconsistencies, but again that is the nature of oral histories.

Records of particular events may or may not have been superseded in subsequent years.  Old and out-dated records have been left in because they were a significant happening of that particular year. A limited attempt has been made to do some cross-referencing older records with newer records.  (Please refer to…)

Special thanks go to Larry Hakel, the Park’s last Red Cone District Ranger, for having suggested the need for a Chronological History of Crater Lake back in 1968.  Larry went on to work at Statue of Liberty, Petersburg and as Chief Ranger at Shenandoah National Park.
