Investigator’s Annual Reports (IAR’s) for Crater Lake National Park

Source constraints for growth of continental arcs based on Re-Os isotope fractionation

Report Number: 12842

Permit Number: CRLA1998HART

Date Received: Jan 01, 1999

Reporting Year: 1998

Principal Investigator: Garret L. Hart, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Department of Geology and Geophysics, Madison, WI

Additional investigator(s): Charlie Bacon, Clark Johnson

Park-assigned Study Id. # CRLA1998HART

Permit Expiration Date: Jan 01, 2000

Permit Start Date: Jan 01, 1998

Study Starting Date: Jan 01, 1998

Study Ending Date: Jan 01, 2000

Study Status: Completed

Activity Type: Research

Subject/Discipline: Geochemistry (inc. Minerals / Petrology)

Objectives: The main objective is to determine the relative amounts of crustal versus mantle material incorporated into magmas rising through the crustal column in continental arc systems. Lassen Volcanic NP occupies the southern end of the Cascade range and the volcanic rocks found there represent mantle derived magma rising through crustal material.

Findings and Status:  Field work was conducted during the summer of 1998, with thirteen samples collected. Samples are currently being processed and prepared for isotopic analysis.

For this study, were one or more specimens collected and removed from the park but not destroyed during analyses? No
