Objectives: Measure surface water temperatures of Crater Lake at same times that the Multi-spectral Thermal Imager (MTI) satellite is imaging Crater Lake from an altitude of about 500 kilometers. Use surface water temperature measurements to determine how accurately MTI can remotely measure water temperatures of high-altitude, cold water lakes. MTI development and testing is funded by the US Department of Energy (DOE).

Findings and Status: Personnel from the Savannah River Technology Center (SRTC) visited Crater Lake in September of 1999 to plan for Crater Lake water temperature measurements after MTI satellite is launched in February of 2000. The water temperature measurements will be made in collaboration with NPS and Oregon State University (OSU) researchers who have long-term ongoing research projects at Crater Lake. MTI imagery will help these researchers better understand nutrient cycling in Crater Lake. Imaging of Crater Lake by MTI satellite should start soon after launch and continue for one to two years.
